On the origin of lanterns

Just learned that geese are closely related to the origins of the lantern in Chinese culture. The gods sent a message down to the earth via geese but human beings were so stupid that they ate the geese instead of listening to the message. The gods were angered by this act and sent another god down to destroy all of mankind. But this god was sympathetic to the human race and told them how to save themselves. Using paper lanterns, they put fire inside of each structure so that when the gods looked down on the earth, all they would see would be a sea of flames, and the assumption would be that mankind had perished and the god had done his job.
